This isn’t the first time Kim Kardashian has shown interest in all things historically significant.
She has declared an interest in vintage clothing, highlighting a Marilyn Monroe gown she wore to the Met Gala last year. To fit into the “iconic” gown, which she had borrowed from the Ripley’s museum, Kardashian revealed in May 2022 that she had shed 16 lbs.
Monroe has been seen wearing it when she sang Happy Birthday to US President John F. Kennedy in 1962.
Kim Kardashian out-bid the other bidders at Sotheby’s London Royal and Noble auction, which ended Wednesday. Princess Diana wore the bejewelled pendant on at least one occasion: At a Charity gala in London, 1987.
Sotheby’s said in a statement that four collectors competed for the amethyst during the final five minutes of the online auction featuring historic objects from royal and noble families. Finally, a representative for Kardashian won the piece, paying far more than the high estimate of $144,400.
The Attalah Cross, a part of the Sotheby’s Royal and Noble sale, was most recently held by the late British businessman Naim Attallah, who served as the global chief executive and managing director of the jewellery company. Diana and Garrard had a close relationship, and for a charity event the firm organised in 1987, they lent Diana the necklace to go with a purple and black velvet Catherine Walker & Co. Diana reportedly had a “special affinity” for the item and wore it on a number of other times. Since the princess’s passing, the piece has not been displayed in public until today.
Kim Kardashian won Princess Diana’s amethyst-and-diamond cross necklace with her winning bid of $197,453.
A Sotheby’s press release stated:
“The cross-shaped pendant — thought to be a one-off private commission by Garrard for one of their regular clients — is a bold and colorful piece set with square-cut amethysts and accented by circular-cut diamonds. The cross has a total diamond weight of approximately 5.25 carats and measures approximately 136 x 95mm.”
