Riverdale’s momentous 100th episode aired a month ago, but fans of the popular The CW series will have to wait a little longer than they imagined for the series’ sixth season to return. Riverdale will not return until Sunday, March 20th, according to The CW, which is a full two weeks later than what was previously scheduled. A bit of pandemic-related scheduling is to blame for the delay. The Critics’ Choice Awards, which were supposed to take place earlier this month, were also postponed. The awards were postponed indefinitely in December due to a surge of COVID cases, however a new date of Sunday, March 13th has since been set.
Because the Critics Choice Awards are aired on The CW, the new date coincides with Riverdale’s scheduled comeback on March 6th. The network is only now rescheduling the return to after the awards. The rest of The CW’s schedule has remained untouched thus far, with The Flash returning on Wednesday, March 9th—a new day for the series—followed by the Season 2 premiere of Kung Fu.
The CW announced in a press Release:
“The CW Network announced today a new midseason return date for the hit series RIVERDALE, now debuting Sunday, March 20 (8:00-9:00pm ET). Based on the characters from the Archie Comics, RIVERDALE is a bold and subversive take on the wholesome town of Riverdale and some of its teen residents, including Archie, Betty, Veronica, and Jughead, as they discover the darkness and dangers that bubble underneath their town’s wholesome façade.
RIVERDALE was originally scheduled to return for its midseason premiere on Sunday, March 6 (8:00-9:00pm ET). An original episode of the HBCU Marching Band docu-series MARCH will air from 9:00-10:00pm ET, as previously announced.
The mid-season debut of Riverdale Season 6 will pick up where the season 5 finale left off. Jughead star Cole Sprouse told Decider that his character will study the explosion in Archie’s bedroom and its long-term effects alongside Betty (Lili Reinhart) and Archie (KJ Apa).
Meanwhile, Percival Perkins (Chris O’Shea) will arrive in Riverdale as a new Villain. This endearing yet dangerous figure will embark on his plan to transform the town into a wonderland.
